I don’t know how it happened, but my eldest grandchild graduated from high school and is now attending the local Junior College. She is having the best time. I have told her that half of College is Networking and making friends that could last a lifetime. She has noticed that a lot of my Facebook friends are people I attended College with in South Dakota what seems like a lifetime ago.
Xan was born with Septo-Optic Displeasure which means that her Optic nerves are short and thin. She has been labeled ” Visually Impaired and legally blind”. The local College has a wonderful program for people with disabilities and Xan has been thriving there. I have joked and said that I do not mind paying Long Island taxes anymore because of the wonderful education she is getting at Nassau Community College. It has been a struggle in the past to get all the services for Xan and to get Xan to take advantage of the services offered to her. Xan, like other teenagers, wants to be like everyone else. I must admit that the counselors at NCC have made a big difference in her attitude and she seems to be happy and making great strides towards independance as well as gaining a first rate education.
