Easter is a special time. We love to remember our heritage. All four of my grandparents are from a little town in Calabria, Italy. Carfizzi is a tiny hilltop village. They speak a dialect called Aberish. It is, from what I can gather, a mixture of Albanian and Italian. These egg cookies have been made by my family for generations. We call them Fishgotas (I have to spell it phonetically). They are very simple cookies made with eggs, flour, sugar, butter, anisette, and anise seeds. My mother made some of the cookies in the shape of Easter Baskets by taking a colored, hard-boiled egg, and surrounding it with dough for the basket, then added a handle on top with more dough. We also made the “bunny” cookies pictured above. My grandchildren prefer the bunnies. These cookies are usually eaten for Easter morning breakfast, however, my brother came over today, Good Friday, and we enjoyed them with a nice cup of coffee.
